If you have whole ogbono seeds and want to make ogbono soup, you’ll need to grind them first. Here’s how you can do that, followed by a simple recipe for ogbono soup using whole seeds:

Grinding Ogbono Seeds

  1. Roast the Seeds (Optional):

    • You can roast the whole ogbono seeds in a dry pan over low heat for about 5-10 minutes. This enhances the flavor but is optional.
  2. Cool and Grind:

    • Allow the seeds to cool, then use a blender or a spice grinder to grind them into a fine powder.

Ogbono Soup Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup ground ogbono seeds (from the whole seeds)
  • 6 cups water (adjust for thickness)
  • 1-2 cups assorted meats (beef, goat, chicken, etc.)
  • 1/2 cup palm oil
  • 1 onion (chopped)
  • 2-3 tablespoons ground crayfish
  • 1-2 teaspoons seasoning cubes
  • Salt to taste
  • 1-2 cups leafy greens (e.g., spinach, bitter leaf, or ugu)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Meat:

    • In a pot, combine the assorted meats, chopped onions, seasoning cubes, and salt. Add water to cover and boil until tender.
  2. Mix Ogbono:

    • In a bowl, mix the ground ogbono with a little cold water to form a smooth paste. This helps to avoid lumps in the soup.
  3. Combine Ingredients:

    • Once the meat is cooked, add palm oil to the pot and allow it to cook for a few minutes. Gradually add the ogbono paste while stirring continuously until well combined.
  4. Add Water:

    • Add more water to reach your desired thickness, stirring well. Let it simmer for about 10-15 minutes.
  5. Add Greens:

    • Stir in the leafy greens and allow them to cook for another 5 minutes. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
  6. Serve:

    • Serve hot with pounded yam, fufu, or any preferred swallow.
